What’s Up

Stand up for the latest water-fitness trend

Stand-up paddleboarding—a sport long associated with ocean-front resorts—has exploded in popularity in recent years as it has expanded to interior lakes and rivers. This summer you can find it in Kansas City area fitness classes, both on and off the water. Traditional stand-up paddleboarding (or SUP), involves balancing on a board that looks similar to an oversized surf board while using a double-bladed paddle to make your way through the water. “It’s a low-impact workout that builds total body strength, develops core strength and challenges balance,” says Jill Potthoff, creator and owner of SUP KC and Jill Potthoff Fitness, LLC, in Overland Park. In addition to an Introduction to SUP class, Potthoff teaches a Conditioning and a Core and Power Yoga class—all done on paddleboards on area lakes. “By combining SUP with different strength exercises and yoga poses, you increase the intensity of the workout and challenge your mind and body. All while enjoying the beautiful K.C. scenery.”  Here’s where you can get your SUP fix this summer.
