Chaz on the Plaza finds New Chef
Chaz on the Plaza has ended its search for a new chef after the departure of chef Charles d’Ablaing. Chef Sean Leventhal will take the helm of the restaurant at the Raphael. Educated at the CIA and with skills honed in seafood restaurants on both coasts, including a stint under James Beard Award-winning chef Wayne Johnson, he hopes to bring a seasonal, coastal focus to a menu that he says will be “Maryland Eastern Shore meets Pacific Rim with a stopover in Spain.”
His new menus, which debuted in mid-July, include new takes on classics such as coffee-rubbed pork loin, black grouper, handmade pastas, Maryland Eastern Shore-style crab cakes and smoked meats.
Q39 Expands into Kansas
Rob and Kelly McGee, the owners of Q39, have plenty on their plate in the coming year. The wildly successful barbecue joint is starting an ambitious expansion plan, beginning with an addition to their 39th Street site this summer and finishing with a new Kansas location in 2017.
The expansion at their current location will include a large deck and an indoor/outdoor bar covered by a water-tight pergola that will add 48 seats for use during warm weather. Inside, another 50 seats and an additional bar will be added. The project is expected to be completed by early fall.
Spring of 2017 should see the opening of their second location in Overland Park in the space formerly occupied by Hayward’s Pit BBQ. It will feature an urban-rustic interior that echoes the original restaurant with a dining room that seats 200. Another 104 guests can be seated in the full-service outdoor dining area. In addition to private dining space and a full-service bar, the restaurant will also feature a windowed butcher room and a full banquet kitchen. Arizona-based Realm Architecture + Design will design the new space, just as they did the original location.
The Rockhill Brings Classic Sophistication to the Crossroads
The Crossroads bid goodbye to The Cashew recently as Back Napkin Restaurant Group debuted their latest concept at 2000 Grand Blvd., The Rockhill Grille. Named for famous Kansas Citian William Rockhill Nelson, the upscale American grill will offer a wide range of cuisine from Back Napkin culinary director Danny White.
The restaurant will focus on well-executed classics with a fresh spin served in a stylish yet relaxed environment. Diners can nosh on house–made tater tots stuffed with jalapeño cheese, fresh salads, a classic burger, fresh oysters, seafood or a perfectly grilled steak. Cocktails will trend toward classics, and an extensive wine and beer list will round out the offerings.
