In the Zone

A Sulgrave penthouse kitchen is redesigned with every inch in mind

“I had a very specific vision,” says one of the homeowners of this Sulgrave penthouse condominium. “Once I made the decision to move the kitchen from the back of the condo to the front, the design fell into place.”

But while she had the overall concept in mind, she knew she needed help with the specifics, and her rapport with Pam Vernon, a designer with Classic Kitchens Design Studio, sealed the deal.

“It was a really good partnership,” Vernon says. “Space planning is one of our stronger suits.”

Before renovations, the space that is now the kitchen was a living room.

The kitchen is designed around zones. Vernon created zones for entertaining, cooking, cleaning, seating and storage. “Because they were downsizing from a large house, every bit of space was at a premium,” Vernon says.

“It’s a serious, working kitchen, not just for display,” the homeowner says.

The couple enjoys cooking and entertaining in their new kitchen. The trough sink set in the island is an important part of that. “We’ve served everything from oysters on the half shell to beer, wine and soda there,” she says. “It has all kinds of uses.”

Because the kitchen is open to the living area, the Plaza view and the back wall of the kitchen became the focal points. “We gave a lot of attention to the backsplash,” the homeowner says.

They are so pleased with the result they’re working with Classic Kitchens again on their lake house.

“It was a joyful process and the results show,” Vernon says.
