Colonial in Mission Hills

'Tis the season for the Kappa Kappa Gamma Holiday Homes Tour. And our gift to you is an insider’s look at these fabulous homes from the 2015 tour, decked out in holiday finery by some of Kansas City’s finest floral designers

Michelle and Bret Oettmeier generously opened their Mission Hills home for the Kappa Kappa Gamma Homes Tour only a couple of years after moving to Kansas City. “It was only their second Christmas in the house,” remembers designer Craig Sole. “It’s a very traditional Dutch Colonial. I thought it needed a little edge,” he says.

Sole says he tends to focus on tasteful but dramatic elements. “I don’t scatter a bunch of small things about. I like to make a statement.” He did just that when he created a Georgian pediment from four large birch trees over the front door and carried the design element inside. Large birch branches provided the base of the garland that ran up the front stairs. “We put pheasant pelts on the mantel. I think Michelle was a little surprised at first, but it was exquisite,” says Sole.
