A Snowy Surprise

McCall Christopher and Tanner Christian were undergraduates at Indiana State University when they met through Christian Student Fellowship. The two had known each other casually for a few years, but it wasn’t until they discovered a Kansas City connection that they started to develop a relationship.

“I started talking about how I was from K.C., and he mentioned that he had cousins living in the city,” Christopher says. “It turned out that they went to my high school.”

After spending more time together, the couple officially started dating the week of their college graduation.
“I moved to Arizona that summer, and he ended up finding a job and following me down there,” Christopher says.

Two years later, Tanner’s unexpected proposal came on a trip through the Arizona mountains.

“We were hiking up to a canyon, and he was being really quiet and kind of weird,” Christopher says. “We got to the top and I was like, ‘OK, time to go home.’”

But instead of heading home, Tanner convinced McCall to follow him to a specific spot. That’s when he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

“It was a total freak-out moment,” Christopher says. “He had actually set a Go-Pro on a rock and recorded the whole thing.”

Christopher spent the next year planning their nuptials, from the color palette to the music and food.
“I knew I didn’t want to do something super formal,” Christopher says. “I wanted the wedding to have a more boho-chic feel.”

The Berg Event Space ended up being the perfect option for the couple’s ceremony and reception, with its downtown location and relaxed atmosphere.

“I loved the mix in tones, from the wood floors to the steel wall,” Christopher says. “The mix of those textures was really cool to me and I loved the loft style.”

Andrea Deschaine from Branches & Twigs created the floral elements, which incorporated plenty of greenery along with succulents and hints of deep red and blush pink flowers. “The flowers were absolutely my favorite,” Christopher says. “I had a lot of inspiration pictures, and Andrea dove into each one and created exactly what I wanted.”

Planning the wedding from Indiana, where McCall was studying to earn her doctorate, brought its own challenges, but when the bride finally saw everything come together, any doubts about her vision were put to rest.

“I was so relieved,” Christopher says. “The vendors that we had did an amazing job of making the details come to life for me.”

And even though the winter weather was a surprise, it didn’t put a damper on the day.

“Standing in the snow, we were taking pictures and I remember thinking, ‘I may not be able to feel my toes, but this is the greatest day of my life,’” Christopher says.
