A Healthy Glow

Beauty blogger Kim Wallace shares her top clean makeup picks for spring

If juice bars and Unbakeries are any indication, the shift towards putting better-for-us foods into our bodies isn’t going anywhere. So it makes sense people are paying closer attention to what they put on their bodies, too. (Our skin is our largest organ, after all.) Cue the explosion of clean, natural makeup, skincare, and haircare products—with formulas and textures superior to the ones previously limited to the corner of the health-food store. Generally based around the idea of using ingredients that are not harmful to our health or the environment, these products have come a long way, but there’s some gray area too. While thousands of products are labeled “natural” or “pure,” there’s actually no regulation for them. The FDA bans or restricts just 11 chemicals from cosmetics, while the European Union bans over 1,300. The Cosmetics Modernization Amendment, which aims to help change that, was reintroduced to Congress in January. In the meantime, Kansas City-based lifestyle and natural beauty blogger Kim Wallace has done her homework—reading ingredient labels and testing products to find those that are both healthy and really perform. There’s a mountain of information and cool brands out there.
